What Is the Pantone Matching System?
The Pantone Matching System is a widely used spot-color communication system in commercial printing, packaging, screen printing, design, and product decoration. A spot-color reference gives a customer, designer, ink supplier, and printer a shared way to identify an intended color target.
For a custom ink mix, the designation is only the starting point. The printed result can change with the ink vehicle, pigment strength, opacity, mesh count, press or screen-print process, substrate color, coating, cure method, lighting, and viewing conditions.
How to Read a Spot-Color Designation
A complete reference commonly includes a number or a recognized color name followed by a paper-stock suffix. For example, PANTONE 273 C is a color reference with the identifier 273 and a coated-stock suffix, C.

Do not omit the suffix or substitute a similar-looking number. Different references that share part of a number can represent distinctly different color targets. Enter the complete designation exactly as it appears in the physical guide or approved artwork.
Common Traditional Reference Families
The following high-level categories can help customers describe what they need. They are informational range references, not a color chart or a substitute for an official guide.
Traditional Solid References
The legacy solid range contains familiar spot-color identifiers and established suffix families used in commercial print specifications. Named standards such as Process Yellow, Warm Red, Reflex Blue, Process Blue, Green, and Black are also commonly encountered.
Traditional Metallics
Traditional metallic base references are commonly identified as 871 C–877 C. Metallic appearance depends heavily on ink formulation, substrate, coating, print coverage, and lighting, so use an actual drawdown or physical guide for approval.
Legacy Fluorescents
Legacy fluorescent reference ranges commonly include 801 C–814 C and 901 C–942 C. Fluorescent inks are particularly difficult to evaluate on screen and can change under different light sources.

Why a Screen Cannot Approve Ink Color
Computer and phone displays create color with emitted light; printing inks create color with reflected light. A screen image therefore cannot reliably simulate every physical ink, especially metallic, fluorescent, opaque, transparent, or specialty inks.
Display Variation
Displays vary by model, age, brightness, calibration, browser, operating system, and color-management settings.
Production Variation
Physical printing varies with substrate color and absorbency, ink film thickness, coverage, mesh count, press conditions, coating, curing, and viewing illumination.
Conversion Limitations
RGB, HEX, and CMYK values are conversions for particular digital or process contexts; they are not universal spot-ink formulas.
For this reason, use digital values only for general layout and communication. Use a physical standard, a drawdown, or an approved proof when color accuracy matters.
