Fountain solutions are a critical element in the offset printing process, responsible for maintaining the delicate balance between ink and water on the printing plate. This solution, which consists of water, additives, and often alcohol or alcohol substitutes, keeps the non-image areas of the plate moist, ensuring that ink only adheres to the image areas. Without the proper fountain solution, print quality can degrade, leading to issues such as ink scumming, toning, or uneven ink application.

• Maintains Plate Moisture: The primary function of fountain solutions is to keep the non-image areas of the plate hydrated so that ink is repelled from these areas. This ensures that ink adheres only to the image areas, resulting in sharp, clean prints.
• Prevents scumming: By keeping non-image areas moist, fountain solutions prevent scumming, which occurs when ink transfers to areas where it shouldn’t.
